Provinces to blame for "fiscal imbalance".
I have another reason to love the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (lefty think-tank which, being lefty, tends to back up arguments with facts and reasons instead of vacuous ideology -- and that's not a gratuitous dig, given this head-in-the-sand behaviour from our elected officials). See here. In essence, provincial governments have created the "fiscal imbalance" by slashing taxes and failing to reinvest in their own provincial structures. And this illustrates the point nicely. Alberta has more money right now than anyone in the country, and they have a huge surplus -- but Ralph Klein keeps passing it down through tax rebates instead of investing it in the province (like a sensible premier would). And... they're crying to the feds for more money! Hysterical.
